The Gaming Floor

Our casino sits on Level 2 of Stratton House at 16-24 Beach Street, right in the centre of Queenstown’s CBD. The whole place is intentionally compact: 8 table games, over 80 gaming machines and TAB betting all operating in one contained space. It is not a huge metropolitan complex and we do not try to be one - the scale is set to fit the town.

On the tables, we run the classic games that regular casino players expect, so most people recognise the formats straight away without a long explanation. The pokies area is fitted out with current-generation electronic gaming machines that are approved for the New Zealand market. TAB betting terminals are on-site as well, so you can put on a sports bet between sessions without leaving the building.

We operate every day from 11:00 AM through to 1:00 AM. The only full closures are Christmas Day and Good Friday. On Anzac Day we pause operations in the morning and reopen the floor at 1:00 PM. It is worth checking those details before you plan a visit around public holidays or long weekends.

Our loyalty programme is called SHOW by SkyCity Premier Rewards. The mechanics are simple enough: you play with your membership card attached to your account, we track your activity, you earn points as you go and those points can then be used for food, beverages or other eligible rewards at the venue.

To sign up, you need to come to the membership desk in person. We will ask for valid photo ID confirming you are at least 20 years old - that is the legal minimum age for both entry and membership and we do not have discretion around it. There may also be identity and compliance checks in line with applicable New Zealand legislation. In some situations staff may need to ask about your source of income or wealth so we can meet those obligations.

Once everything is verified, we issue your card. From that point, using it is straightforward:

1. Insert or tap your card at gaming machines before each play session.
2. Hand it over at table games so the dealer or supervisor can ensure your play is recorded.
3. Redeem any accumulated points at the venue for food, drinks or other rewards that are part of the programme.

If you do not want to enrol, you can still play on the floor without a card, but you simply will not earn points on that activity. For anyone planning to come back more than once, carded play usually makes more sense in practice.

One small tip we pass on to new visitors: if you are thinking about joining Premier Rewards on your first visit, bring more identification than you strictly expect to need. It tends to speed things up at the desk and avoids repeat trips back to your hotel or accommodation.

Bars, Lounges and Live Entertainment

The gaming floor is just one part of how we run SkyCity Queenstown. We position the property as a premier entertainment destination in Queenstown, and the bar and lounge areas are a core piece of that setup, not a side note.

The Level Two Bar and Lounge is our main social space. It serves drinks, has a more relaxed pace than the floor itself and is open to anyone who is in the venue, regardless of whether they are gaming or just meeting friends. The Peacock Lounge hosts live entertainment and events at different points in the year. The line-up shifts with the season, so a summer schedule will not necessarily match what is happening in winter.

Both areas carry the same age restriction as the casino itself. Entry anywhere in the venue is R20, which means guests must be 20 or older to access the bar, the lounge or the gaming floor. There are no exceptions to that rule.

Planning Your First Visit

Because the casino is on the second floor, the first thing to look for is our street-level signage at 16-24 Beach Street. From there, you head upstairs to Level 2. It is only a short walk from the main waterfront area and most people staying in central Queenstown will pass nearby at some point.

To keep your first visit running smoothly, a bit of planning helps:

1. Check your preferred date is not Christmas Day or Good Friday, as we are fully closed.
2. If you are visiting on Anzac Day, plan for arrival after 1:00 PM once the morning closure ends.
3. Bring current government-issued photo ID - entry is restricted to customers aged 20 and over without exception.
4. Decide in advance if you want to join Premier Rewards, because that sign-up needs extra identity documents at the membership desk.
5. On arrival, have your ID ready at the entrance. Our security team manages entry and can answer basic questions on the spot.

Compared with major New Zealand casinos, our floor is relatively small, which creates a different feel but also means the more popular tables can be busy when tourist numbers spike. If you prefer a quieter room, arriving closer to the 11:00 AM opening time generally gives you a better chance of finding a seat quickly, although of course that can vary.

Licensing and Regulatory Status

SkyCity Queenstown is one of a small number of casinos that hold a legal casino licence in New Zealand. Our licence has been renewed with a 15-year term, currently running through to 2040. That renewal was approved by New Zealand regulators and reflects ongoing compliance with national gambling legislation.

We operate under the New Zealand Gambling Act and are overseen at a national regulatory level. SkyCity Entertainment Group, the parent company, is the formal licence holder and is responsible for compliance duties linked to the Queenstown site.

SkyCity Queenstown opened in December 2000 as part of SkyCity Entertainment Group’s move into the South Island tourism market.
